POWERS OF CREATION — SCIENCE AND CREDITS Cinematic v2 | source review, 2 November 2026 WHAT THIS FILM IS An illustrative journey across representative length scales, produced locally with Python, Blender/Cycles and FFmpeg in the Engines of Creation worktree. It combines authored, editable Blender scenes with deposited DNA coordinates, NASA Earth texture composites and NASA's observed solar time-lapse footage. The scene compositions, materials, cameras, animation, type and editing were created for this project. Scientific source data and observations retain the attribution given below. This is a local production demo, not evidence of a hosted website autonomously creating these assets. It should not be described as entirely generated imagery: the film's Sun chapter is observed NASA footage, and other scenes use the credited scientific data. Attribution does not imply NASA, RCSB PDB, wwPDB, MIT, NIST or another institution endorses or is affiliated with the project. Subjects are individually reframed. Their apparent screen sizes and chapter transitions do not depict one physically continuous zoom, a real camera route, or objects occupying the same location. Materials, color, light, particle size, motion and timing are composed for communication rather than calibrated physics. 1. CELL — AUTHORED BIOLOGICAL ILLUSTRATION The approximate 20-micrometre diameter is a representative animal-cell scale; cell types vary substantially. The scene is a generic cutaway, not a measured specimen, a cell-type-specific reconstruction, or microscope footage. Membranes, nucleus, nucleolus, chromatin, mitochondrial folds, ER, Golgi, cytoskeleton and vesicles are procedurally modeled. Nuclear pores, ribosome-like forms, nucleosome-like granules and crowded cytosolic particles are geometric stand-ins, not meshes segmented from tomography or experimentally determined protein/enzyme structures. Their number, arrangement, relative dimensions, colors, opacity and surface relief are illustrative. The rendering of a participating medium is a visual treatment, not a quantitative cytoplasm model. On-screen qualifiers: "TYPICAL DIAMETER" and "Illustrative cutaway". DNA — EXPERIMENTAL COORDINATES, AUTHORED DISPLAY The DNA model uses PDB 1BNA: the synthetic Drew–Dickerson dodecamer, an experimentally determined right-handed B-DNA duplex. The deposited structure has 12 base pairs, two antiparallel strands, and sequence CGCGAATTCGCG on each strand in the 5'-to-3' direction. It was determined by X-ray diffraction at 1.90 angstrom resolution. The current builder reads the 486 DNA heavy-atom coordinates from the supplied JSON, recenters them, applies a proper rotation and uniformly scales them. Those operations preserve geometry and handedness. It does not invent a long repeat helix or wrap this fragment around a curve. Eighty deposited water oxygens remain separate in the source JSON and are not rendered; the deposited file has no hydrogen atoms. The display uses spheres and bond cylinders. Their radii, colors, gloss, lighting and rigid-body motion are authored choices. This is not a literal electron-density image, photographic molecular color, calibrated space-filling surface or molecular-dynamics trajectory. Covalent connectivity is derived from the wwPDB chemical component dictionaries plus standard consecutive backbone links, as documented in molecular-sources.txt; all bond cylinders are a visual simplification of the retained bond-order metadata. The approximate 2 nm label refers to duplex width, not this fragment's length. Sources and citation: https://www.rcsb.org/structure/1BNA https://doi.org/10.2210/pdb1BNA/pdb Drew et al. HYDROGEN — QUALITATIVE QUANTUM VISUALIZATION A neutral hydrogen atom has one electron. The many plotted points represent possible sample locations for that one electron, not thousands of electrons present simultaneously and not a recorded electron trajectory. The diffuse spherical cloud is intended to evoke the hydrogen 1s probability distribution; there are no planetary electron-orbit tracks. The proton is deliberately enlarged. The approximate 0.1 nm characteristic scale is about two Bohr radii; it is not a sharp atomic boundary. Real 1s probability density decays with distance and has no hard outer surface. In the illustration, the exponential volume and point sampling use separately tuned scales and a finite display cutoff. Brightness, scattering and point sizes are not a normalized or quantitatively calibrated probability plot. The narrative "A cloud of possibility" accompanies the explicit on-screen "1s probability illustration" and "Proton enlarged for visibility" labels. Preserve that context: an orbital is not a classical hollow shell, electron probability does not vanish outside the nucleus, and the illustration is not a statement that matter is optically transparent. EARTH — NASA COMPOSITES ON AN AUTHORED GLOBE The scene maps NASA's Blue Marble day and cloud imagery onto an authored sphere with separate cloud and atmosphere layers. These are historical composites, not live weather, a single exposure, or a measured atmosphere volume. NASA's land/coastal observations were collected in June–September 2001; the cloud product combines visible and polar thermal-infrared observations over multiple days. The day map includes topographic shading. Optical roughness, cloud-shell height, opacity, atmospheric scattering and rotation are visualization choices. The 12,742 km label is the rounded mean diameter, based on approximately 6,371 km mean radius; it is not the larger equatorial diameter. Texture credit: NASA Goddard Space Flight Center; Reto Stöckli for land, shallow-water and cloud imagery; Robert Simmon for processing/compositing and visualization. MODIS teams supplied data/support; topography is from USGS. The originals are 21600×10800 and 8192×4096 pixels. 5. SUN — OBSERVED FOOTAGE IN THE FILM The film uses NASA SDO's "Active Region Conga Line" sequence, observed September 22–24, 2012 in the AIA 171-angstrom (17.1 nm) channel. This is an extreme-ultraviolet view of coronal structures rendered in false color, not the Sun's visible-light appearance, photospheric granulation, or simulated plasma. The original 3840×2160, 25 fps, 14.04-second time-lapse is cropped for portrait composition and retimed to six seconds at 24 fps. This accelerates an already accelerated observational sequence; playback seconds are not exposure times. The published date range is retained without inventing exact exposure times. No artificial inter-frame motion is required by the current finisher. Credit: Courtesy of NASA/SDO and the AIA, EVE, and HMI science teams. It is not the 2012 movie, does not reconstruct the three-dimensional corona, and supplies no observed far-side coverage. Its small rotation is authored staging. The two dates refer to different source assets and must not be combined into one observation claim. Stable still source: https://sdo.gsfc.nasa.gov/assets/img/browse/2026/11/02/20261102_065558_4096_0171.jpg Complete still/movie provenance and checksums: assets/sun/SOURCES.txt and JSON. The unused procedural _sun() function retained in planetary.py is not the selected build_planetary('sun') path and is not the film's solar source. 6. GALAXY — REPRESENTATIVE MILKY WAY ILLUSTRATION The galaxy is an authored spiral-galaxy representation: an original 2048×2048 turbulent light/extinction texture on a warped disk, two asymmetric dominant arms with weaker fragmented secondary structure, volumetric depth and tiny instantiated stars. It is not a photograph of the Milky Way from outside, an imported telescope image, a reconstruction of individual measured stars, or a dynamical galaxy simulation. Arm placement, light, dust, color and animation are illustrative. The approximately 100,000-light-year scale refers to the stellar disk; definitions of the disk's extent vary and the larger halo is not included. The preceding "One star" and following "Among hundreds of billions" refer to the Sun within the Milky Way's stellar population, not a precise count of rendered objects. NASA's educational reference gives approximately 100–400 billion stars: https://science.nasa.gov/universe/exoplanets/our-milky-way-galaxy-how-big-is-space/ 7. COSMIC WEB — AUTHORED DENSITY FIELD The current source constructs a deterministic 128×128×128 illustrative density field from thin Gaussian filaments, clusters and smooth perturbations, then renders it as a single continuous volume with fine three-dimensional density noise and embedded galaxy markers. The field and its 128-slice texture atlas are generated locally. This is not observational survey data, an N-body/cosmological simulation, a map of our actual cosmic surroundings, or a visible-light image of dark matter. The density and warm/cool colors are compositional encodings, not measured mass, gas temperature or spectral color. Points in this scene represent galaxies, whereas the galaxy scene's points represent stars. The rendering container is a numerical boundary, not an edge or shell around the universe. It carries no claim about the size of the entire universe. Preserve "Illustration · not an observational map" on screen. REVIEW STATUS AND HANDOFF Reviewed the current model-building source, film copy, finishing labels, source metadata and local asset paths. The current labels are appropriate for the illustrative framing and qualifications above. This is a source/provenance review; the render queue and final assembled film require their own visual QA. No GPU rendering was invoked for this review. The film starts directly on picture and uses hard chapter cuts; only the final web picture fades to black in the last quarter-second. Caption alpha fades remain independent of the picture. Upper narrative is regular-weight text over a readability scrim. docs/cosmic-design.txt describes the current warped galaxy disk and single 128-cubed web field; obsolete construction counts have been removed. Current instance counts are generated by cosmic.py and stored as properties on each scene's root object, not treated as scientific counts.
